This is a small, unofficial tribute to Steven L. Peck’s novella A Short Stay in Hell, which is built on Jorge Luis Borges’s story “The Library of Babel.” All credit for the world, its rules and its quiet horror goes to Peck (and to Borges before him). If this gives you even a flicker of the feeling, please go and read the book. It does it far better.

I made this for fun, quickly, to get a brief sense of the place through the lens of an old-school handheld game. You walk the endless corridor as Soren, pull books off the shelves, and leaf through all 410 pages of nonsense. You can eat at the rest stops, look across the chasm at the other side, and, if you insist, climb over the railing. Every book is generated from where it sits, so the same shelf always holds the same pages, for everyone.

It’s a toy, not an adaptation: details are simplified, the dialogue is my own, and it isn’t affiliated with the author or publisher.
